Why were Moses and his people not allowed in the promise land?

I know that they were banned but do not know why.

When twelve spies entered the promised land to scout it out, ten of them returned with negative reports of "giants" who couldn't be defeated. The people became demoralized and refused to go. As punishment for their failure to trust in God, He said they would die in the desert and their children would be the ones to enter the land.

Moses was not allowed to enter the promise land as he has been born in slavery. Similarly, no other Jews born in slavery were allowed. The reason is that only truly free people were allowed.

Many Hebrews did enter the promised land! Joshua, Caleb and children who did not yet know good from bad (see Deu 1:34-39) where permitted to enter Canaan. The parents and the grandparent of those children all died in the desert for being disobedient to God. 1 Corinthians 10:1-10 has details. See Numbers 20 to see why Moses didn't enter Canaan.
