Spanking was popular in the 50's because it was on the brink of sexuality in films. The films of that time were not very provocative but that was a borderline way of having sexuality in film. Many of the films involved younger women with older men.

In the 1950s, spanking was seen as the default and even preferred method of discipline. A parent who did not discipline their child for everything from stealing to talking back was seen as doing something wrong for NOT spanking the child for the transgression.
