Why might people of the time have had opposing views of Geronimo?

Some people likely opposed Geronimo due to his role in leading opposition armies against white and Mexican settlers. He was a thorn in the side of any colonist who dare lay foot on Apache lands.

Geronimo was leading a rebellion against lawful movement of Native Americans to reservations. He kept up the fighting even as his people starved, even though going to the reservation would lead to handouts of food and promises of support.
