Stainless steal is used mainly because it is less likely to corrode and cause a gas leak. Additionally, it is less likely to react with the gas or spark and possibly trigger a catastrophic explosion.

Other metals may be used in areas where it is easy to monitor and replace the lines. Corrosion can not only weaken the pipes, but force joints open as well, allowing gas to escape.

In my opinion the main reason this metal is chosen is because is less corrosive and more resistant to extern factors. Another one is that is pretty cheap and strong enough to resist to big pressure.

Usually it is used because it is cheap to produce while remaining strong enough to handle the high pressures of natural gas, and it is lighter than older iron tubing.
