Why is my internet browser making me use https before each address?

If I just go to my browser and put in, say, "facebook. com" it will not work. I have to put https://.

Usually the browser uses https or http by itself but not possible in older versions. S in https stands for secure. That is your browser allows only secure connection alone.

https is a protocol which uses secure socket layer (SSL). The site which uses SSL usually starts with https. If a site has been protected with secure socket layer then the transmission of data between the browser and the server is encrypted. This is required usually when the user name and password is sent to the web server.
