Why is my four year old making up stories?

I think children hear so many stories and they have to listen so much to what ever everyone else says that they like to tell stories too.

I honestly believe it is a phase, my 4 year is currently doing the same thing, when I know she is lying I tell her that the lies hurt mommys feelings, then time out usually follows. It's getting better, try checking out some parenting books on the subject. They help!

Your child is not being talked to enough. She is making up stories to captivate the attention of an absent audience. She can see that she gets a reaction from you even when she knows that you know she is lying.

She is trying to see exactly what you will tolerate and what she can get away with! She is testing your intelligence! You need to catch her in a lie and have consiquences!

She is probably making up stories because she is trying to stay out of trouble. It takes a while for children to learn that lying gets them into more trouble than just telling the truth, even when they have done something wrong. Keep reinforcing this with her, and hopefully she will grow out of it soon.
