In traditional Jewish and Christian culture, the head of the family and society is male. Anthropomorphically, this meant that those people groups projected their understanding of "leader" onto their conception of God, and thus thought of God as male.

In Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, God is explicitly referred to as male. Since these three faiths include more than half of the world's population, a majority of the population has the belief that God is male, thus the common male reference.
