The eels have nodes on their body which the current generated by their electro-magnetic field can pass through easily. The injury happens when the field passes through muscles or high-resistant tissues. By providing a low-resistance pathway through its body, the eel is immune to electrical fields generated by other eels or itself.

Electric eels have special cells in its body that produce electricity and act as little batteries. The skin of the eel has a higher electrical resistance than the fish it stuns so when it stuns a fish the electricity will flow through the fish rather than the body of the eel.
