The vent that lets sewer gas escape is not functioning and the gas is coming up your toilet drain. This is harmful and the vent needs to be replaced/repaired immediately.

The probable answer is that the wax seal underneath the toilet has worn away. You must turn off the water and remove the supply tube from the toilet. The loosen the bolts holding the toilet down. Use a pair of pliers to remove old seal and then replace. Set toilet!

Usually when you smell sewage from a drain it means there is a crack on the p-trap(the U-shaped pipe). In the toilets case, there is a built-in p-trap, visible on the side of the toilet. There may be a crack somewhere along the toilet. Another problem could be the wax ring, which seals the toilet to the drainage, needs to be replaced.

We just changed our toilet today. In fact, we did notice a tiny (2 mm) crack on top of the encased p-trap, hence the gas would go into bowl. The wax ring was fine. Now our bathroom smells better.  add a comment

Could be that your vent pipe is clogged at the roof level by a bird nest, leaves, or a bird carcass., or at the source by soap scum. A plumbers snake can be used to remove the clog.

You may have a clogged venting pipe in line with the toilet drain. This will cause the drain for the toilet to suck all the water from the p-trap on the toilet and allow the sewer smell in.

Usually this is caused by the wax seal under the toilet has worn out and the vent gas is seeping between the flange and toilet.

Well, because it may very well be sewer gas. Sometimes sewer gas will travel up the pipes and come out the other end. The best ways to get rid of the smell are to flush water down it to hopefully trap the gas and use bleach to kill bacteria.

I found a little hole inside the toilet, between the flush water inlet chamber and the waste outlet pipe down to the sewer. This was allowing sewer gas to come up and escape from under the toilet rim. Took 6 months to work it out!

You have a wax seal under the toilet that might be leaking. It is easy to fix and any DIY shop can tell you how to replace it.

It quite possibly is sewer gas. If toliet hasn't had use and the trap is dry, there is nothing to block the gas from coming up. It is important to flush toliets periodically and to check that leaks are not letting the water out.

Not a big repair bill! I found a ring of slime type mold/algae that was tan in color on the inside rim of my water tank at the water line and on the underside of the float. Used bleach treatment, drained and cleaned water tank, cleaned toilet. Awful smell gone!

check your house connection is it connected directly to the main trunk sewer or nor if it does possibly the smell woud be there , the solution is to provide pack drop connection to prevent the smell occure.
