Rabbits like squirrels, mice and rats are rodents. The main characteristics of this family of animal is that their teeth continue to grow throughout their life. Rodents must continue to chew or gnaw to wear down their teeth. If they don't gnaw their teeth will continue to grow curling into their mouth until they are unable to eat.

If the teeth appear longer than normal - in comparison to the past length of your rabbit's or to other rabbits, it is most likely due to their inability to gnaw sufficiently to keep the teeth from becoming overgrown. Rabbits require a constant supply of safe gnawing material, as their teeth will continue to grow throughout their lives.

A rabbits teeth grow continuously. A rabbit who does not eat enough good quality timothy hay, or have access to chewing toys, their teeth would not grind down to an appropriate length. This needs to be remedied by a visit to a veterinarian who would grind down the teeth while the rabbit is sedated.

Some rabbits get "malocculusion" which means their teeth grow too long. Rabbits need something like wood to chew on, to keep their teeth filed. Their teeth grow throughout their lives, so they will need to chew. Once they get too long, a vet will need to file them down, or your rabbit will have problems eating and drinking.
