Why does my Land Rover have a ticking noise?

Answer by  Allstar (2071)

It could be anything from a pebble stuck in the tire tread to a loose valve rocker. I would have to know more about the ticking noise to make a more useful diagnosis.

It could be something as simple as an exhaust leak, or something as complex as an internal engine failure. You really need to take it to a qualified mechanic to make sure.

This could be for many reasons. One of the most common reasons is that there is a stone stuck in the tread of your tyre.

This could be caused by a few different thing. Sometime the valve train needs adjustment and start ticking. Sometime fuel injectors can also develop a ticking sound as the get older.

Are you moving when it ticks? Does the tick change if you rev the engine? Could be a leak, engine problem or something like CV shafts.

This depends on where this "ticking" noise is coming from. Most sounds are engine related. Somethings gotten jammed up in the engine. Or perhaps your battery is dying. You might need to take it in.

In most cases with that model it is a lifter or rocker. Definatley check your oil, and maybe put in some lucas oil, if that does not help the problem; Going to your mechanic to have him take the valve cover off and investigate, he will be able to tell you what your next step should be.

A ticking noise is often a timing belt that is off. You should take this in to check the belt and the fan.

Probably the exhaust pipes cooling down and shrinking. When it is running, the heat makes them expand. Once you turn off the engine, it starts to cool and the metal parts shift around.

The problem may be that a valve is malfunctioning. Does the ticking speed up when the engine is revved? if so it may be that the valves need to be adjusted.

the ticking noise is probably your valves taping. You might need to get them adjusted, or it could simply be that you are running low on or the incorrect weight oil.

A lot of reasons could be causing your ticking sound. A lot of fuel injectors, as they get older, make more sound- somewhat of a ticking noise.
