Why does my John Deere 140 mower heat up and stop?

Sounds like the ignition coil may be the culprit. Sometimes when the coil heats up it will fail and cause loss of spark, in turn stopping the machine.

The 140 is an antique, the problems is likely a lean running carb caused by a worn throttle shaft hole in the carb or lean carb jet settings. It is air cooled so it could also be the engine block fins are blocked with grass or other materials.

I had the same problem. The voltage regulator had been removed so the coil was getting too much voltage overheating, swelling and shorting out (.100 of an inch tolerance in the clutch). Clutch can only take 13.5v, alternator puts out 15v.

You are probably moving up a hill and down with the mower or just simply overworking the mower to the maximum. It is very unlikely in a John Deere 140 mower to just heat up and stop, please check with the manual to get tips on how to work the mower properly.

If you mower seems to be heating up then stopping you will need to put more fluid in it. Once the fluid has been put in it will stop overheating.
