Why does my engine not engage when I shift gears on my Honda Civic?

Whether the car is manual or automatic, there are only two possibilities for an engine not to engage when shifting gears. It's either the transmission oil has run out, which could be caused by leakage due to a loose drain plug, worn out transmission oil pan seal, or damaged gasket; the other is that the clutch disc is worn out.

Well it would be helpful to know it it was a manual or automatic. If it is a manual and it won't go in any gear the clutch is probably done for. If it is an automatic transmission it may be low on fluid or it has suffered some kind of internal damage.

Most likely it needs a new clutch disc. A worn clutch would make the motor not grasp the transmission input shaft properly.

This issue can be caused by a defect between the transmission and the engine. This doesn't necessarily mean the entire transmission is bad, but there may be faulty wiring between the two components. The car should be evaluated by a transmission specialist.

It is most likely a factory defect. This seems to be happening often in Honda's. It may also be that your gear is stuck and you just don't notice it.

If you your Honda Civic is old may be the teeth of gear may damage or the gear box may repaired. Do regular service with periodically.

Honda Civic is not like other Cars. It is one of the most modern Car with advanced technology in the advantage of fuel and also less handling expenses. It's engine will not engage during the time of gears shifting because it has a pre-arranged automatic system.
