A clattering sound when you start your engine could be an indication of serious engine damage. There is a good chance that your rod bearings need to be replaced before you ruin your crankshaft. Although it could be something less serious, I recommend you stop driving the vehicle and have it checked out by a qualified mechanic.

This may be normal, caused by parts losing their oil film due to sitting, or caused by valves that need to be adjusted. Have a mechanic give it a listen.

There could many different problems and it depends on your vehicle, it's engine, and other factors. If the clattering sounds like something that should not be there, take it to a mechanic to have him or her check it out and fix it.
