Why do they say cairn terriers have donkey ears?

You are more likely referring to a skye terrier. They have large course haired ears like a donkey. Carin terriers have the same shape but no other similarities.

Well the most common reason is because of the size and shape of the ears. they are quite similar to donkey ears.

That is due to fact that their ears are pointy and from time to time they would fold one or both of their ears alongside their head, much like a donkey would In addition to that Cairn terriers are most time grey and their hair is short, which subsequently adds to the donkey ears apeal

Cairn terriers tend to be teased because of the size of the ears. even though the cairn terrier isnt that big in size, it has strong hearing.
