Why do they make 4th and 5th grade combined classes?

Many of the skills learned in the 4th grade are repeated and refined in the 5th grade. Combining the two grades allow students in both grades to work with peers on their same level and at the same time be challenged by available work that is more advanced. Overall students come out with stronger skills.

Typically they combine grade levels due to small class sizes or lack of teachers. Often in combined classes, the 5th graders end up teaching or helping the 4th graders.
