Why do pictures on the Internet look blurred?

They might appear blurred because they have been uploaded as low resolution images, which makes them smaller (and hence faster to load on a slow connection) but means they have less detail and may look "blocky". If you are on a very slow internet connection, it's also possible they have not completed loading and are yet to fully display.

They should not look blurred. You might have your screen resolution set to a size the picture don't display well in or your browser may be zoomed in.

Usually blurring results when a picture has diagonal lines which are sent to something that uses horizontal-only scan lines. The diagonal line cannot smoothly flow down; it must "stair-step" to the closest horizontal scan line. Sometimes a blur is injected deliberately to help the eye with this, called "dithering".

You're probably using microsoft internet explorer and have clear type set. try to disable it or better turn to a different web browser (firefox recommended)

Most of the pictures on websites are compressed. The advantage is smaller size and therefore websites load faster. The disadvantages is the picture quality is decreased, hence images look blurry.
