Why do people raise huge dogs?

Large dog breeds are kept for many reasons. They do make good guard dogs, however some have historical roots. The Mastiff for example is a very ancient breed of dog, with pedigrees spanning back hundreds of years. Generally the reason for keeping a larger dog is purely aesthetic, many people just like the appearance of a bigger dog.

The motivation for people raising huge dogs varies greatly. Some people like having big dogs for protection, some just like having huge dogs, and others are used to big dogs and that's what they want. Big dogs tend to be friendlier than little dogs and are often great companions for people.
