They're probably seeking some sort of moisture. Perhaps you recently washed your car in the drive? Do you have lawn sprinklers?

It could be a mass migration and desire to mate that brings earthworms out to the surface if it is dry. It can also be due to not enough oxygen in the soil. It could also be due to a chemical application on the lawn or low voltage electrical wiring underground with a short that is running current underground.

They could be searching for water elsewhere because the grass is too dry in your yard. Earthworms need water to survive, which is why they come out during the rain. They will also crawl onto pavement if it gets wet by sprinklers. If your grass is moist, try checking where your sprinklers spray and redirect to reduce the worms

Sometimes earthworms are driven to the surface due to an underground electrical current. Fishermen use this technique to gather bait. Maybe there is an electrical wire that is going into the ground. Has your electric bill increased lately? Also, if you've been washing the driveway off, there might be enough moisture.
