Look up. It is possible that you have termites. Termites eat wood and they leave sawdust-like residue. If you have uncovered wooden beams on your ceiling, it is possible that the sawdust comes from termites. They are dangerous to the structure of the house so you will need to call a professional exterminator.

You may have wood eating insects in your home. Carpenter ants burrow through wood to create large living spaces for their colonies, and you may see sawdust where they are active. Termites also burrow into wood, but since they actually eat the wood you are less likely to see sawdust.

Call an exterminator. If you have wood flooring under that carpeting, it's a sure bet that some bug is happily munching away at that wood and the resulting sawdust is making its way to the surface. Otherwise, insects might be finding other wood to eat and are burrowing into the carpet to hide.

Do you have any wooden furniture arround? The minute bugs in the wooden furnitures scratche the particles like a saw machine. Within a minute these bugs can saw a lot of wood. You can hear them sawing. Naturally you are noticing the saw dust on the carpet. You can notice the holes made by these bugs in the furnitures.
