Why do hamsters squeak?

Is my hamster trying to say something, or do they just squeak?

Usually a hamster will squeak when something is wrong. You need to check and see what is happening. If nothing seems to be wrong, then it may have gotten scared by a bug or spider. If that isn't the problem then it may be trying to communicate with another hamster if you have more than one or even with you.

When a hamster squeaks that means he is scared or upset about something. They are very skittish animals. They do not like sudden movement,

When a hamster squeaks it is a sign of distress, a cry for help. Check hamster immediately for any obvious injury. Also, check cage for any burrs and mechanical problems with wheel. If he/she continues to squeak, have vet check for any possible injury.

There are several reasons why they squeak. They could be doing it as a greeting, they may be hungry or just want attention.

All they can do is squeak so check on him if he does. He could be frightened of something in the cage, in some sort of pain or communicating to another hamster if you have one. If none of that is going on he may just be talking to you!

I believe that hamsters and rats are similar and my rat squeaks when she wants to be let go! She also does something called rat chatter!
