Why did Elizabeth I cut her hair?

Elizabeth I (reigned 1558-1603) was only the second female head of state to rule England in her own right. Being a woman at a time when crowns passed mostly to men and boys, she probably cut her hair to symbolize her power and independence as an unmarried woman.

It was done in show to say she would never be a beauty to be married. It partially done to make it easier to wear wigs and her small pox.
