Why are my tooth fillings more sensitive to hot and cold than my teeth are?

While a nerve in the tooth is always involved, the transmission mechanism of heat/cold to the nerve itself is most important. The heat/cold conduction properties of the filling must be compared to that of the tooth itself, and generally heat/cold are transmitted better through the filling. Therefore, fillings contribute to the sensitive issue.

This is due to the fact that fillings are made from metallic elements. They tend to conduct hot and cold sensations to the center of the tooth and cause increased sensitivity. Although normal teeth are able to conduct some sensations, the metallic material used with fillings tends to amplify this. Have a great day!

Fillings are typically filled with metal or porcelain. These materials conduct temperature to the dental nerves better than your teeth, heightening the temperature sensation felt.

The fillings can be made of a material that conducts heat (and cold) faster and better than the enamel in teeth. Thus the fillings conduct the sensation of hot and cold to the nerves in your teeth better than your teeth do. The next time you are at the dentist, ask about options.
