More than a few folks claim they're the author of Footprints. Margaret Fishback Powers and Mary Stevenson are two likely candidates.

No has figured it out for certain. The most likely "culprit" is preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon in an 1880 sermon. It is not, however, Margaret Fishback Antolini.

It has never been proven who wrote the poem "Footprints in the Sand," but a couple of the "suspects" of the authorship are Charles Haddon Spurgeon and Mary B. c. Slade.
