It was written by Ernest Hemingway and it's about a man (only referred to as "the american") and woman (whom he calls "Jig") on a train discussing (in rather coded phrasing) the idea of the woman having an abortion.

That would be Ernest Hemingway. It is about a woman and a man traveling together in Spain and they have a discussion about an operation that the man wants the woman to have. By the title as well as the dialogue, we can assume that the man wants the woman to have an abortion.
