The greatest guitarist ever depends on your bias of music. If you are into blues or classic rock, then the greatest would certainly be Eric Clapton. For jam-influenced music, Jerry Garcia would be a solid candidate. For jazz, Pat Metheny or Wes Montgomery. For psychedelics, the greatest would be Jimi Hendrix. For reggae, probably Bob Marley.
