Actors Gene Hackman and Jeffrey Hunter were chosen to play the role. They were not chosen because,the former lacked experience while the latter was too handsome.

The creator and producer of the Brady Bunch originally had Gene Hackman in mind for the role; however Hackman was not well known at the time and had no experience in television. Robert Reed had tested for several different parts for television with Paramount. Even though the Brady Bunch was his least favorite, he was cast as Mike Brady.

The show's creator Sherwood Schwartz initially wanted the role to go to a young Gene Hackman, but network executives thought the actor did not have enough experience. Jeffrey Hunter was also approached about the role, but Schwartz ultimately decided he wasn't right for the part.

Originally Sherwood Schwartz wanted Gene Hackman to play Mike Brady on the Brady Bunch. Unfortunately since he was not a well-known actor at that time the part was given to Robert Reed.

Originally to play the part of Mike Brady, they really wanted Gene Hackman. However, at the time Gene Hackman wasn't a very well known actor, and they decided it couldn't really work out. So they hired actor Robert Reed instead to play the part of Mike Brady from the Brady Bunch family.

The original choice was late actor Jeffrey Hunter but producers felt he was too handsome to be an architect. Second choice was actor Gene Hackman,however, eventually part went to actor Robert Reed.

There were actually two actors that were picked to play Mike Brady. They were Jeffrey Hunter and Gene Hackman. They had to rethink things though, because they needed someone with experience and someone who could look average.
