There was lead singer Marty Balin who recruited another folk musician, Paul Kantner, guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, jazz and folk vocalist Signe Toly Anderson, drummer Jerry Peloquin, and bassist Bob Harvey.

The original members were: Grace Slick, vocalist; Jorma Kaukonen, lead guitar; Jack Casady, bassist; and Spencer Dryden, drums. Also, Paul Kantner and Marty Balin were jack-of-all-trades who sang, wrote songs, and played various instruments.
There was only one member of the actual jefferson band who was on the airplane. His name was Signle Toyle. He was a talented musician to board the plane on the launch party.
