Father Damien was a Catholic missionary who ministered to lepers in Hawaii. He was granted sainthood because he died of the disease himself after caring for lepers for 16 years.

"Damien of Molokai", born Jozef De Veuster, was a Catholic priest from Belgium, and a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He was declared a saint by the Catholic Church after dying from contracting a disease taking care of sick people for 16 years.
