It's not who but what. The name Brazil is derived from a Portuguese/Spanish word brasil, an Indian tree with reddish-brown wood used in dye-making. When the Portuguese explored what we now call Brazil, they found trees similar to the Indian ones and named the new country after the eastern tree.

It was named for the tree, Brazil wood, that was heavily exported by the Portuguese during the 1500s-1800s. Thats what I believe.
