Who sang the song, "I Shot the Sheriff"?

I have always liked that song.

Answer by  Addy (162)

Bob Marley wrote the song and released it on the 1973 the album, "Burnin'. " Next up was Eric Clapton. He covered the song a year later, in 1974. Clapton's version hit the Billboard 100 #1. Rapper Warren G. did it in 1997. His rendition hit #20 in the US. I suspect it's Clapton you remember.

The original was on the Bob Marley & the Wailers album, Burnin', from 1973. The version that got the most American airplay, the one you may be thinking of, was the 1974 Eric Clapton single from the 461 Ocean Boulevard album, which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Clapton's only chart showing.

Bob Marley wrote the song and Eric Clapton sang the version of it that most people are familiar with. He wasn't the first one to sing it, though. He was actually doing a cover of a prior release of the song by a ska/reggae band called The Wailers.
