It's literally the power of horses. Say a car has 5 horsepower. That means it has the power, speed and all that equal to 5 horses.

The term "horsepower" was coined by James Watt many years ago. Essentially Watt came up with the phrase to compare the amounto work done by an engine to the amount of work done by horses.
