Vernor's Ale was created by James Vernor more than 130 years ago and remained a family business until 1966 when the ale was sold to multiple companies over many years before finally being purchased by A&W in 1987. Dr. Pepper bought A&W in 1993 and merged with 7UP in 1996.

Vernor's soda is a ginger ale that shares the title of America's oldest soft drink with Hire's root beer. It's manufactured by the the Doctor Pepper Snapple Group.
