Originally, witches were most likely practitioners of native, non-Christian religions in ares where Christianity was starting to move in. Early church leaders, in their attempts to gain control of the population would distort the facts about the native religions, demonizing them and calling them evil.

When time travelers from our future who have superior technology visited the past in time tourism not all of them were careful to hide their true identitity and some people from the past may have seen their technology and called it magic.
