The Biblical patriach Jacob (also called Israel) had twelve sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. From these twelve sons, the people of Israel came to be composed of twelve tribes. The tribe of Judah are the people descended from Jacob's fourth son, and the Messiah was prophesied to come from Judah.
