Four African-Americans have served in the Senate since the Reconstruction: Ed Brooke (Republican, Massachusetts, 1967-79), Carol Moseley Braun (Democrat, Illinois, 1993-9), Barack Obama (Democrat, Illinois, 2004-8), and Obama's replacement in the Senate, Roland Burris (Democrat, Illinois, 2008-present). Only six blacks have been U. S. senators: two Republicans from Mississippi's reconstruction period in the 1870s, Massachusetts Republican Edward Brooke who served 1967-1979, recently three Democrats from Illinois. They're Carol Mosley Braun, Barack Obama, and Obama's controversial replacement Roland Burris. Burris is currently serving.
