Four African-Americans have served in the Senate since the Reconstruction: Ed Brooke (Republican, Massachusetts, 1967-79), Carol Moseley Braun (Democrat, Illinois, 1993-9), Barack Obama (Democrat, Illinois, 2004-8), and Obama's replacement in the Senate, Roland Burris (Democrat, Illinois, 2008-present). (As a side note, Moseley Braun was also the first African-American woman in the senate. )
