The Great Lake that borders Illinois is Lake Michigan. It is the third largest of the Great Lakes by surface area, and is about the size of the state of West Virginia. The lake also borders the states of Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. The name "Michigan" comes from the Ojibwa word "mishigami", which means "great water".
