Les Paul are more commonly used in blues music, mainly because the strat, while brighter, carries less sustain than the Les Paul. This means that the bass notes are lost slightly, and the lower overtones are very important in that bluesy sound.

Typically a Les Paul is better, but it is really more dependent on what effects you are using. Good effects can make for a very bluesy strat. A Les Paul is probably more bluesy with its clean sound, but only because it's nice and heavy in that middle frequency range, which is good for blues.

Both guitar are ideally suited for playing blues music. The Strat has a biting tone, and a great clean sound suitable for single note playing and embellishments. The Les Paul is better in some aspects because of the longer sustain which is suitable for string bending. Neither guitar would be a bad choice for playing the blues!

A Strat tends to be better for blues because of the distinct tone of a strat. The single coil pickups tend to sound more like the blues.
