How would I go about installing a single coil pickup in a Les Paul?

The usual solution is to use a four wire humbucker, wired to a push pull switch on one of the tone pots. In one position, the pickup works as a humbucker, pull the knob and the two coils work as two single coil pickups in parallel. Gets you that single coil sound without changing the appearance.

With a 4 wire pickup you can install a series/parallel switch. It will sound close to a single coil, but still be humbucking.

Les Pauls are designed to house larger humbucking pick-ups,so the excess space in the body will need to be filled a wood block glued in and,sanded and painted to match.
