The best type of wood for a Les Paul guitar became maple after years of design of the final solid body electric guitar named after the great guitarist. Other woods were discovered to be inappropriate for this particular solid body guitar as they were too heavy for performance needs; prior electric guitars used by Paul were hollow-body instruments.

It depends on what kind of properties are important to you. The standard wood for most solid-body guitars is Alder, which is fairly light and tonally balanced. Maple will give you a thicker low end and is heavier, as is walnut. Go to your local guitar store and play a few to find a wood you like.

Traditionally a Les Paul uses mahogany for the body,with a maple "cap" on top. The neck wood used is also mahogany with a rosewood or ebony fretboard.

I would use cuban mahogany. however The hole package is what makes that LP tone and feel. The shape. The mahogany body and thickness. The mahogany neck and thickness.
