In the northern hemisphere the toilet water swirls counterclockwise. The swirling of the toilet water in the northern and southern hemisphere is result of the Cariolis Effect.

It is a common misconception that toilet water swirls in a particular direction in each hemisphere. In fact, the direction that a water swirls in any vessel (be it your toilet, tub, sink or otherwise) is determined by the shape of the vessel and the direction from which the water enters it.

The water can spin in either direction, or not at all, depending on how the toilet is made. The water usually enters at an angel making it swirl.
