If you're talking about buying power, the US was the leader after WWII. We had fewer reconstruction costs and more expendible income. 200 years ago would have been Great Britain.

the economic leader 200 years ago would be the British Empire,this was due to the colonies owned, in American Continent, India, Australia and Asia.due to this condition, British Empire able to export different type of commodity.50 years ago,the economic leader shifted to USA,due to the factor of post WW2,which Europe face major economic destruction,thus USA able to perform major exporting.
