The United Kingdom in the form of the British Empire and The newly formed Germany were the two leading economic countries in the early twentieth century. Both were based on imperial economic models. The conflict between the two helped to cause their removal from a leading position.

One hundred years ago in 1910, the two leading economies in the world were England and Germany, judged on GDP, GDP growth, technological growth, and military might. The British Empire, with its dominant navy and extensive colonies, was at its height; newly-organized Germany had been quick to industrialize.
