Fifty years ago, at the end of World War 2 and into the 1950s, the United States was the overwhelming economic leader. Two hundred years ago, in the 1700s and early 1800s, England and its empire were the major economic power. This was primarily due to its colonies in India, South Africa, Australia, and Canada.
