The first European settlement in Pennsylvania was at Tinicum Island, which was the capital of New Sweden between 1643 and 1655. The Dutch conquered Swedish territory in 1655 and England took over New Dutch territories in 1644. Pennsylvania became a separate colony in 1682 with the earliest settlement at Philadelphia.

There is no name for the first few colonized regions, but the entire region became known as Pennsylvania in 1681, when it was first granted colony-ship. It is named for William Penn.
