Where did Hannibal get his elephants?

It is believed by many that the elephants used by Hannibal were African elephants that came from the Atlas Mountains of Morroco and Algeria.

Nobody knows for sure. Indian elephants are much easier to train than African ones, but would also have to have been transported a long way to reach Carthage. Some scholars think the elephants could have been a smaller subspecies African Elephant, which once lived in the Atlas mountains.
