Mayors is a jewelry store that will appraise your jewelry and actually give you a certificate stating what the item is and what is worth. They are very trust worthy and have been around for many many years.

Most jewellery stores should be able to tell you if the diamond is real or not quite quickly and for free. If you want a valuation try a pawnbrokers.

Take it to a jeweler. I personally would take it to a smaller, family-owned jewelry store instead of a chain store. The family-run businesses tend to provide more personal service and typically employ people who really know their gems. I find stores that do custom pieces in-house to be especially good.

Any jewelers or pawn shop will be able to take a look and tell you if it is a real diamond, and a rough idea of the quality.
