Really there is no free way to get a vin number check. The only time you get one free is from a car lot. However it isn't actually free. Dealers pay a monthly fee for vin checks. Sometimes Carfax has a free report promotion though.

Check your search engine, there is a website that allows you to check the vin for free before you purchase a so called "lemon"
