Call the Lawyer Referral Service in your area. While the service doesn't provide pro bono, it does have the names of attorneys who offer discounted legal services to those who qualify. Keep in mind that an attorney is not required for many issues, like custody, child support, etc.

To search for legal aid in South Dakota, one should contact the South Dakota Bar Association or you could ask your local county's bar association who provides legal aid in certain areas of the law.

Legal Aid offices are usually located in the larger cities. Call the State Bar or call Social Services i your area for info. Legal Aid usually takes on only divorce/custody cases involving documented domestic abuse.

The best place to start is with the Salvation Army. They have aid for finacialy needy people and can help point you in the direction if they can't help. If it is a criminal case the court itself will help with legal aid.

Call the Bar Association in the area where you live. You may have to call the State Bar. Someone there can give you information about legal aid. Much of legal aid is directed to helping women who are the victims of domestic abuse. Some law schools offer clinics that can answer questions.
