Question by  ted (15)

When solving a rational equation why is it necessary to perform a check?

I am attempting to understand math.

It is always a good idea to check your work because everyone makes mistakes. However, you are correct that a check must be done for rational equations, which have denominators. You need to make sure that your solution does not make a denominator equal zero because that would make the solution invalid.

It is necessary to perform a check with any solution, as careless working will lead to wrong answers. Checking makes sure that the answer is correct

When we multiply both sides of an equation by the LCM, the resulting equation might have solutions that are not solutions of the original equation. Thus we must always check possible solutions in the original equation. If you have carried out all algebraic procedures correctly you need only check.
